Syntony Creations creates economic, social and environmental gains
to support the sustainable development of disenfranchised communities
through business and education.
In Veracruz, Mexico, the prisons are called "Centers for Social Rehabilitation", and most of the inmates there are serving time for petty economic crimes, driven by poverty and desperation. Sadly, most will be back serving time within a few months of their release—lacking money, a job, and a place to live, there's nowhere else to go and no safety net.
Syntony Quest wants to change all this, and these unique, artisanal bags are the first step. Handmade from recycled food wrappers by inmates, each purse requires hundreds of wrappers, and takes many hours to complete. Inmates are getting paid for this work, so when released they will have some money to start with.
And right now, a nonprofit organization is being created to hire the inmates when they leave the prison. By providing dignified work, education and a living wage, Syntony Creations will ease the disadvantaged conditions and discrimination they face while reintegrating with society. The long-term objective is better quality of life—increased economic opportunities, education to improve their products, craft, local communities and environment, and creation of useful and aesthetic objects from waste material that otherwise would contaminate our environment.
